How to use the online teleprompter
- Paste your script into the box, or drop a .txt file onto it. Start a line with # to mark a section, and add [pause] or [breathe] where you want a beat. Neither is read out or counted.
- Set the speed. About 150 words per minute suits most people. The word count shows how long your script will take at that speed.
- Pick the text size and line width. Narrow lines keep your eyes still, which matters on camera.
- Press Start. The teleprompter opens full screen and counts down from three. Press the space bar to pause, the arrow keys to speed up or slow down, and Escape to finish.
How to read it without looking like you're reading
Viewers spot a teleprompter from your eyes, so put the words as close to the camera as you can. On a laptop, keep the reading line at the top of the screen, right under the webcam. With an external camera, put the browser window on the screen directly behind or below it.
Keep the lines short so your eyes don't sweep across the screen, read a phrase ahead before you say it, and pause where you've marked a pause.
